When you invest €8,000–€15,000 in a solar PV system, understanding the warranties that protect that investment is essential. Solar panel warranties in Ireland are governed by a combination of manufacturer guarantees, installer warranties, and Irish consumer protection law — and they’re not always as straightforward as they appear.
This guide explains what each warranty covers, what happens when things go wrong, and how Irish law protects you beyond the manufacturer’s own commitments.
The Three Layers of Solar Warranty Protection
Layer 1: Panel Product (Workmanship) Warranty
The product warranty (also called the workmanship or manufacturing warranty) covers defects in the panels themselves — physical problems that are the manufacturer’s fault. This includes:
- Delamination (layers separating)
- Discolouration or yellowing of encapsulant
- Broken cells or frames
- Junction box failures
- Backsheet cracking or delamination
Typical terms in 2026:
- Standard brands (Longi, JA Solar, Jinko, Q CELLS): 12–15 year product warranty
- Premium brands (REC, Panasonic): 25 year product warranty
- Enphase IQ8 microinverters: 25 year product warranty
What is NOT covered:
- Physical damage from hail, storm, falling objects (covered by home insurance)
- Damage from incorrect installation (covered by installer warranty)
- Normal performance degradation (covered by performance warranty, not product warranty)
- Deliberate damage or misuse
Layer 2: Performance (Output) Warranty
The performance warranty guarantees that the panel will still produce at least a specified percentage of its rated output after a defined period. Standard terms:
Standard (Longi, JA, Jinko)
Example: A Longi Hi-MO6 panel rated at 420 W carries a 25-year performance warranty guaranteeing at least 80% output at year 25 — i.e., at least 336 W. If it produces less, you have a valid warranty claim.
How performance is measured: Performance warranty claims require you to demonstrate that the panel’s output is below the warranted level. This typically involves:
- Measuring actual output with calibrated equipment under Standard Test Conditions (STC) OR
- Comparing actual monitored output against the PVGIS-modelled expected output, adjusted for weather
In practice, performance warranty claims below year 25 are rare for quality panels — degradation at 0.40%/yr means year 10 output should be at least 96% of original. If output is significantly below this, the system likely has a fault rather than a warranty claim.
Layer 3: Installer Workmanship Warranty
Your installer provides a separate warranty on the quality of their installation work. This covers:
- Roof mounting: waterproofing, structural fixings
- Cable connections and terminal quality
- Inverter installation and commissioning
- Generation meter installation
- Compliance with ETCI wiring regulations
Typical terms:
- Most SEAI-registered installers offer 2–5 year installation workmanship warranties
- Some installers include a roof waterproofing guarantee (5–10 years) specifically for roof penetration points
- SEAI requires that grant-eligible installers meet minimum standards — using a SEAI-registered installer is the baseline protection
The gap: Installation warranties typically expire well before the panel and performance warranties. After year 5, fault diagnosis becomes more complex — is the issue a panel defect (manufacturer), a degradation issue (performance warranty), or an installation problem (installer)?
Inverter Warranties
Inverters are warranted separately from panels. In 2026:
Enphase IQ8 microinverters
The extended warranty question: Is it worth paying for a 20-year inverter warranty extension? At year 10, a Fronius Primo might cost €600–€800 to replace. The extended warranty extension at purchase costs €200–€400. If the inverter fails at year 12, the extended warranty saves €400–€600. It’s borderline for most homeowners, but purchasing the extension provides peace of mind and can be factored into resale value.
Your Rights Under Irish Consumer Law
Beyond manufacturer warranties, Irish and European consumer law provides additional protection:
Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 (as amended)
Under Irish law, goods must be:
- Of merchantable quality (fit for purpose, durable, properly finished)
- Fit for their stated purpose
- As described (matching what was sold to you)
If a solar panel fails within a reasonable period (courts have found this extends beyond the manufacturer’s product warranty for long-lived goods), you may have a claim against the seller/installer under Irish consumer law — regardless of what the manufacturer’s warranty says.
Key point: Your statutory rights run against the installer/seller, not the manufacturer. If a panel fails 18 months after installation but before the product warranty period ends, and the manufacturer is unresponsive, you have rights against the Irish installer.
Consumer Rights Act 2022
This updated Irish legislation strengthens consumer protections for digital products and services but also reinforces rights for goods. Key provisions:
- Right to repair, replacement, or refund for non-conforming goods
- Reversed burden of proof (seller must prove the goods were conforming for claims within 12 months)
- Applies to contracts with consumers
EU Sale of Goods Directive (2019/771)
Under EU rules transposed into Irish law, defects discovered within 2 years of delivery are presumed to have existed at delivery unless the seller proves otherwise. This effectively gives you a minimum 2-year period of strong protection.
What to Do When Something Goes Wrong
If a Panel Is Defective
- Contact your installer first (not the manufacturer directly)
- Document the issue: photographs, monitoring data, inverter fault codes
- The installer should diagnose the fault and, if confirmed, initiate a warranty claim with the manufacturer
- If the installer is unresponsive or no longer trading, contact the manufacturer directly with your proof of purchase
- For manufacturers without an Irish/UK office, contact a registered EU distributor
If Performance Is Below Warranty
- Compare actual monitored output against PVGIS-modelled expected output for your specific system (same orientation, same irradiance data)
- Subtract known shading losses and soiling allowance
- If actual output is persistently below the performance warranty threshold, document with 12 months of monitoring data
- Contact the installer (most performance claims require professional diagnostic assessment)
- Consider an independent PV performance audit (cost: €300–€800 from a specialist firm)
If the Installer Has Gone Out of Business
This is the most complex scenario:
- Panel product warranty: Claim directly with the manufacturer or their EU/UK distributor
- Performance warranty: Same as above
- Installation workmanship: Your statutory consumer rights against the seller still exist in principle, but enforcement against a dissolved company is practically very difficult
- Home insurance: Some home insurance policies cover solar PV failures — check your policy
- SEAI grant pathway: If the installation was grant-funded, the SEAI maintains a register of approved works and may assist with dispute resolution in some cases
The practical lesson: The financial stability of your installer matters for long-term warranty protection. A well-established installer who has been trading for 10+ years is less likely to have disappeared before your 12-year inverter warranty is up.
Key Questions to Ask Your Installer Before Signing
- Panel product warranty: How many years? Who do I contact for claims — you or the manufacturer directly?
- Performance warranty: What percentage at year 25? How is underperformance demonstrated?
- Inverter warranty: Standard period? Cost to extend? Replacement process?
- Your installation warranty: How many years? Does it cover roof waterproofing specifically?
- Manufacturer’s Irish/UK presence: Is the manufacturer represented by an authorised distributor in Ireland or the UK for warranty claims?
- Your company’s trading history: How long have you been in business?
